How to decorate with glass hurricanes and lanterns, Christmas edition

I love decorating my home (obviously) and talking about it is so much fun too! Today I am sharing how to decorate with glass hurricanes and lanterns, Christmas edition. There are a number of ways to fill those pretty glass hurricanes, mason jars, vases and lanterns. I am sharing just a few of the ways I have used them to decorate my home for this jolly season.

I met up with a friend for some retail therapy at Target. Our kids were in school and I think one of us had to get laundry detergent or something, maybe? This resulted in getting coffee and then perusing the aisles for about an hour. Typical Wednesday stuff, right? Anyways, we were in the home section of the store and my friend commented on the cute glass hurricanes. Then she said "I just never know what to do with them." Me being the good friend I am shrugged my shoulders and cataloged this for later blog content, never giving her any ideas; she will just have to read my blog! Kidding, I told her a few ways to I fill these for Christmas. But I did realize this would be a fun post for my blog. I assume many people are at a loss on what to do with those glass hurricanes, vases and beautiful lanterns.

This year for my coffee table Christmas decor I went with simplicity and nature. I added some pine cones and a candle into my lanterns. These specific lanterns are really dark (which I love) but the contrast of the brown pine cones and the white candle feels like a nice way to have these lanterns work for my decor this season.

My pine cones are far from perfect. They are literal finds from our walking excursions, my kids pick up any little thing and call it a treasure. I call them home decor.

This is how I decorated the lanterns last year. I added some red brads and a slightly different candle. This is still so pretty and really let's the colors of Christmas shine.

This year I also used some shiny ornaments and put them in a glass vase. This idea is a really easy one to create, and simple ball ornaments are in every single store. I was actually going to purchase a whole new set of round ornaments for a "just in case" situation to have on hand. You know, for those decorating emergencies? Always be prepared.

A few years ago, I believe my first year blogging I shared a craft on how to make fake snow. The snow will not last year after year because of the water used to make it, but one season of the fluffy stuff in a mason jar or glass vase is a really cute idea.

I have had these little acorns floating around forever in my home. I think I got them from a thrift store. Getting little tiny items like this to fill in the glass vases is a great option. I like the idea of the acorns for Christmas. It feels Christmas-ish without being over the top.

This grouping of glass hurricanes are in my dining room. Which is a work in progress. I have shifted around some furniture in here, added a new piece. I am finally conquering this room, I have never felt like I had the room quite right. I think I finally have it, and I am so excited to share it with you all very soon! I have some new Christmas decor in here to share as well. But, I can give you sneak peek of what I have as a centerpiece.

I get these glass hurricanes typically from the dollar store, or a thrift store. I have the red beads, which gives such a rich and bright color for this season.

Nora helped me with this idea. She had this white yarn she wanted to use in our home somewhere for Christmas decorating. I was working on filling these glasses and we thought this would be a fun idea. She wrapped the yarn into the glass. We topped it off with some sparkly pine cone ornaments, because in an 8 year olds world everything is better with sparkle.

Another point to make when decorating with glass vases or lanterns is to pay attention to how you group them. What you set them with. For my dining room I used this tray I created, just putting in wrapping paper that has a fun plaid and Christmas themed pattern. It has them grouped together and feels like it was a thought out process. Also pay attention to height, having them all one height can feel a little dull. Change up the height with the glass items.

Lastly use other items to compliment them. In almost all of my decorating areas where I used these glass pieces I added something smaller and shorter. This adds a new focal element. Adding something with greenery or flowers helps to warm up the starkness of the glass surface.
